Local food co-op’s and CSA’s

Looking for Organic Produce
in the Montclair, NJ Area?

Here are some options:

Local Farms…………………………………………………………………………………………..
Community Supported Agriculture is a program hosted by farms that invite members to buy a weekly “share” of food produced during the growing season. Some CSA’s ask that members work on the farm for a handful of hours, picking beans or ears of corn, for instance. Others have no work requirement. The first CSA in the US started in 1985, and today there are more than 1,000 CSA’s across the US and Canada. A CSA allows consumers access to farm-fresh products at lower-than-retail prices, and farmers gain a reliable market.

The Community Supported Garden at Genesis Farm – 41 B Silver Lake Road, Blairstown, New Jersey 07825; (908) 362-7486; http://www.csgatgenesisfarm.com/index.html
A biodynamic farm offering summer and winter shares. Summer shares include organic and biodynamic fruits and vegetables at about $1100. Winter shares include vegetables, root vegetables, cornmeal, and sauerkraut – all grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. At present, the CSG uses approximately 51 acres of land in northwest New Jersey. There are three greenhouses that extend the growing season and provide some fresh salad greens over the winter months. Over 10 acres are in cultivation with vegetables and berries. In addition, there are a 256-tree orchard and hardy kiwi vines. There are several self-organized pick up sites in the area. Pick up is Tuesdays or Fridays. Call the Gardenhouse at (908) 362-7486.
